Marseille and the surrounding region are known to have the most "sunny days" in the whole of France. The mild winter and long summer have been instrumental in making the whole area such a sought after destination for film and photo productions.
The Calanques, just outside the city, are famous for having their own microclimate, being fully exposed to the sun, but protected from the Mistral, the wind which blows from time to time over the region. These factors, combined with the rare rainfalls, have promoted hot and dry conditions and unique fauna and flora.
